Michael Harris, PhdMichael Harris PhD, Interim Provost, Professor of Public Policy, Major (Ret.), Intelligence Officer, Israel Defense Forces, (IDF). Consultant to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). Former Provost, Chancellor. Harris’ interests focus on: public policy, leadership, national security, economic development, motivational speaker and international business. Born in South Africa, Michael Harris grew up on a commune in Israel. Dr. Harris is an author of 5 books and over 50 published articles. Harris holds a B.A. in economics and business administration from Bar-Ilan University M.A. in Public Policy from Tel-Aviv University PhD in public policy from Indiana University. Dr. Harris has a  broad global perspective and a deep insight into Israel and the U.S.

Leadership & Academic Career

Harris is Interim Provost and Professor at the College of Public Service at Tennessee State University.

From 2010 to 2012, Harris served as the sixth Chancellor of Indiana University Kokomo and a Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs, Business, and Education. Harris increased enrollment to the largest number in campus history. He initiated an athletic program and led IUK joining the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Chancellor Harris championed successful fundraising, including a $1.25 million gift from Milt and Jean Cole for a new wellness and fitness center. At the time, this was the largest cash gift ever received by IUK.

Harris served as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan from 2007 to 2010. He was the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ferris State University (2004-2007), a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and subsequently Associate Provost at Eastern Michigan University (1994–2004), and a faculty member in the Graduate Program of Public Policy at Tel Aviv University (1993-1994).

In 2012, the Hebrew-language newspaper, Maariv, named Harris as the most successful Israeli academic working outside of Israel. The Kokomo Perspective named him their Person of the Year for 2011. He received the Best in Class 2009 Award from the Keen Entrepreneurship Education Network and an Honorary Doctorate in Educational Administration from Ave Maria College. In 2012 the 434th Air Refueling Wing in Grissom Air Force Base named Indiana University Kokomo Chancellor Michael Harris the Honorary Wing Commander. In 2015 the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) named Dean Harris a consultant.
